The first publication of the Zoological Society of London. Vol. 1 is Quadrupeds; Vol. 2 is Birds. Vol. 2 is dated 1831, printed by Whittingham, and published by J. Sharpe. Edward Lear's Blue and Yellow Macaw engraving in vol. 2 (p.125) precedes his landmark 1832 book of parrot lithographs. Other illustrations, innovatively drawn from the zoo's live specimens, by William Harvey. Very scuffed half calf, marbled boards, inked ownership from 1850, foxing and some fingerprints on margins; ex libris Albert Westlake; spine labels incomplete, with half-titles. 005610

Greene was focussed on caring for birds in cages and aviaries. Here he describes the behaviour and characteristics of the 80+ parrots, cockatoos, cockatiels, lories, macaws, parrakeets etc. which are splendidly portrayed in these hand-finished plates. "We have entered into full particulars of the treatment necessary for preserving Parrots in health [ Sitwell p. 103; Nissen 393; Wood p 368; Zimmer p 274]. Octavos, original cloth with gilt parrot stamped on the top covers: vols 2&3 are near-fine, but in vol. 1 the first ten plates have been re-tipped-in; edgeworn. Photographs available. 006138
