In addition to the translation, William Roscoe contributed an introduction, a sonnet and a closing poem "Inscription." Roscoe attributes the "Notes" to be mainly the work of the Italian editor, Ranza, with a few observations by himself. The Italian original, and the English translation are on facing pages. The engravings: a title page vignette, one before each canto; one at the head of the Inscription and a small tailpiece after the Inscription, have sometimes been attributed to Bewick, but are more likely Bewick's apprentice, Henry Hole [ Hugo, Bewick Collector, 197]. Marbled endpapers; contemporary calf covers with gilt borders, black spine label with gilt title, and gilt decorations along spine are rubbed; scuffed covers. 005588
