Bellenden, William Praefationis Ad Tres Gulielmi Bellendeni Libros, DE STATU London W. Brown & J. Warren 1788 Second Edition Contemporary Full Calf Good Mezzotint Portraits Bellenden was a Scottish scholar of the classics who held posts under King James, and later was a professor at the University of Paris and an advocate in the parliament. His first work compiled Cicero's remarks on the origin and principles of regal government. His second work examined the authority of the Roman Consuls and Senate. His "three works were combined in a single large volume, entitled De Statu Libri Tres, 1615, which was first brought into due notice by Dr. Samuel Parr, who, in 1787, published an edition with a preface, famous for the elegance of its Latinity, in which he eulogized Burke, Fox and Lord North as the three English luminaries." This 137 page interleaved copy contains mezzotint portraits of Burke, Fox and North. Inked annotations on many of the interleaves. Vertical split in spine has been repaired. Rare. 002684 Price:
