The first, [ This one, Chicago] was published in a limited edition of five hundred by John Carbutt. Many copies were subsequently destroyed in the 1871 Chicago fire ... so copies of this book are rare -- Welling, COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO NINETEENTH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHS, p. 105. Of its 107 biographies, 93 are illustrated with an original photograph. Note: this copy lacks photos of Potter Palmer and Alexander McClurg, which are present in the Chicago Historical Society copy. The Ordinary Edition of this has only one original photograph. of City Hall, . on the lithographed title-page. [ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS 1287; TRUTHFUL LENS, 13]. Inscribed to "Clara E. McClellan / from Uncle John / Chicago Feb 11th, 1869": Uncle John is quite likely John Van Osdel, Chicago's first architect, whose biography and photo appear within at pp. 90-95, and who was married to Martha McClellan.
