London 1836 Hardcover Very Good. J. M. W. Turner, Thomas Stothard, Samuel Prout
Printed for T. Cadell, Strand; and E. Moxon, Dover-Street. Bound in contemporary reddish-brown calf with gilt rules, borders and floral motif frame; spine with elaborate gilt decoration, raised bands; inner gilt dentelles; all edges gilt. Former owner bookplate on front paste-down endpaper. Light wear at cover edges; some foxing throughout. "Much of it was originally published as it was written on the spot. He (the author) has since revised it throughout, and added many stories from the old chroniclers and many notes, illustrative of the manners, customs, superstitions." Illustrations were commissioned from J. M. W. Turner, Thomas Stothard, Samuel Prout and others, and engraved in steel. Rogers was offered the position of Poet Laureate after Wordsworth, but did not accept, due to his advanced age. 005570

Includes 40 poems, among which is the major work: "The Pleasures of Memory," -- the poem which made Rogers' literary reputation. Byron said of it: "there is not a vulgar line in the poem," and it has been considered "the last embodiment of the poetic diction of the 18th century." This collection was published after the success of the poet's revised and expanded edition of "Italy;" and its form modeled after that volume with its fine steel engravings after illustrations of J. M. W. Turner, Thomas Stothard, and others. 005571
