"Atwater was one of [several] commissioners appointed to negotiate with the Indians. This treaty ceded most of the lead region in southwestern Wisconsin and northern Illinois to the U.S. for $500,000 to be paid over 30 years, plus $30,000 in goods and $20,000 in damages for intrusions by squatters." A minister and then a lawyer, Atwater had studied and written about the earthworks of the Hopewell and Adena Indians in Ohio. This work concentrates heavily on the tribes of Wisconsin and the Upper Mississippi River. He explores the civilization of the tribes, and includes a 'Rudiments of the Grammar of the Sioux Language,' aka the Dacota Indians." [Field 54; Howes A379]. 006646

Bennett was an 1854 graduate of Union College. He became a Master in Chancery for the U.S. Circuit and District courts, and wrote a law treatise on the Law of Lis Pendens. He was twice President of the Board of Trustees of Hyde Park before Hyde Park was annexed into Chicago. He presented this copy to Hon. Egbert Phelps. The occasion was the reunion of the class on its thirtieth anniversary. 001066

Extensively revised, 1951-1952. Numerous additional features included in the revision. 425 pp plus a 3 page listing of plant families in Hancock County. Includes photo reproductions, and maps.
