1 Atwater, Caleb Remarks Made On A Tour To Prairie Du Chien; Thence to Washington City, in 1829.
Columbus, Ohio Isaac N. Whiting 1831 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 16mo
Pages: [8], 296 . Full tree calf, stains inside, two chips in front free endpaper; ex libris W. Fullerton. In a brown cloth solander case with matching chemise: ex libris Stephen Robert Parks. "Atwater was one of [several] commissioners appointed to negotiate with the Indians. This treaty ceded most of the lead region in southwestern Wisconsin and northern Illinois to the U.S. for $500,000 to be paid over 30 years, plus $30,000 in goods and $20,000 in damages for intrusions by squatters." A minister and then a lawyer, Atwater had studied and written about the earthworks of the Hopewell and Adena Indians in Ohio. This work concentrates heavily on the tribes of Wisconsin and the Upper Mississippi River. He explores the civilization of the tribes, and includes a 'Rudiments of the Grammar of the Sioux Language,' aka the Dacota Indians." [Field 54; Howes A379]. 006646
