2 Spring Catalogue, 1870. Field, Leiter & Co.
Chicago Field, Leiter & Co. 1870 First Edition Full Morocco Good 24mo
Developing from its predecessors, Marshall Field and Levi Leiter joined forces as Field, Leiter & Co. in 1867, and evolved to become the modern department store. In the meanwhile, as importers, jobbers and operating in dry goods, they issued the catalogue -which may be the first catalogue created by the firm. We have located no other copy of this catalogue, nor any earlier catalogue, so this very rare item is offered "as is" and "with all faults": Approx. collation (marking missing leaves) is 1-4, 7-10, 15-44, 49-90, 95-98, 103-108, 113-115, i-v. stub of rear free endpaper: note, a number of the pages were left blank except for the word "memoranda" at the top. [ Not in Ante-Fire Imprints]. 005389

Chicago Wilson & St. Clair 1868 First, Deluxe Edition Embossed Leather Very Good Octavo Mounted Original Photographs
"Beginning in 1868, books were prepared in the United States, with biographies and original photographic illustrations of noteworthy citizens of a number of cities. The first, [This one, Chicago] was published in a limited edition of five hundred by John Carbutt. Many copies were subsequently destroyed in the 1871 Chicago fire ... so copies of this book are rare -- Welling, COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO NINETEENTH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHS, p. 105. The Ordinary Edition of this has only one original photograph. of City Hall, . on the lithographed title-page. [ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS 1287; TRUTHFUL LENS, 13]. Inscribed to "Clara E. McClellan / from Uncle John / Chicago Feb 11th, 1869": Uncle John is quite likely John Van Osdel, Chicago's first architect, whose biography and photo appear within at pp. 90-95, and who was married to Martha McClellan.
