1 Somervile, William The Chase, A Poem: To Which is Added Hobbinol, or the Rural Games
Birmingham Robert Martin for A. Donaldson 1767 First Baskerville Edition Full Calf Good + Sm 4to
This edition combines his two most famed blank-verse works. "The Chace" tells of a dog hunt by the ancient Greek gods and goddesses. "Hobbinol" is a burlesque "epic" which describes life in Somervile's Warwickshire. A troubled John Baskerville placed his press into the hands of Robert Martin, his foreman (and brother to the typographer, William Martin). This is the first work produced on the press under the imprint of Robert Martin. Ex libris Gwyneth Lloyd Thomas. Inked inscriptions at top of title-page, contemporary sprinkled calf rehinged with tips of spine repaired., 199pp., light tidal markings on final leaves. 005600
