Morse is the Father of American Geography. The first edition of this appeared in New Jersey in 1789. This second edition is the first published in Britain. This has two folding maps ( Northern and Southern states). The Southern map, compiled by Joseph Purcell, "is the most accurate yet published respecting that country, on so small a scale." Later editions were called The American Universal Geography and had more maps. [Howes M840; Sabin 50924l; See Sowerby 3963 for the 1796 edition]. The first map has two cellophane tape repairs, the second map is linen-backed with slightly trimmed. 8vo; xvi, 536 pages, minor foxing, contemporary sprinkled calf, new calf spine, raised bands, red morocco label. 006900
