Author's first book, published in wartime, with wartime restrictions. Signed in the year of publication: Signed by Bellow at the top of the front free endpaper. Below that is a Christmas presentation "For XXX: An autographed copy -written by one of my old gang ... Merry Xmas Love Harriet" N.B. this appears to have been an school chum, and not Harriet Wasserman, Bellow's literary agent. The dj has significant edgewear, with a break at the front fold, and a scrape in the upper right corner above the "ing"; bottom edges of cover bumped. The debut book of this Nobel Prize-winning Chicagoan. 002749
