First state of binding in original maroon cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamp in gold with publisher's name at foot of spine; "Published June, 1914" on copyright page, and "W. F. Hall Printing Co. / Chicago" set in Old English type on two lines of verso of title leaf. Presentation copy from the Dedicatee of this work, Emma Hulbert Burroughs. On the recto of the blank second leaf : "To Philip / from your Aunt / Emma / Christmas 1914 (the second "1" in the year was originally penned as a "0", and then overwritten with a "1"). This copy of the book has been with one family in the Chicago area for many years. Samples of Emma Burroughs's signature are not as readily available as are ERB's, but this signature looks like those we have seen of Emma's. [Zeuchsner 696]. (Note: recent evidence suggests the earliest copies had a cancel title-page; this title-page is conjugate).The covers are scuffed, and there is wear at the cover edges, with slight loss of cloth at head and foot of spine; occasional spotting on pp. 1-20, tiny tear and partial crease at leaf 201/202; hinges professionally repaired with paper.
